The Hiatus is Tentatively Over

Hi All --

It has been something like six weeks since I put Five Secrets on hiatus. I did so for a number of reasons, but the main one were:

1. Working on the site every day with essentially no return on the time became overwhelming and frustrating.
2. Submissions had heavily trended toward the repetitive, boring, overdramatic and/or not-really-secrets for quite some time, and I got tired of wasting my time and mental energy coming up with titles for them.

Since disabling the submission box I have done a lot of thinking about whether I want to let the site remain dormant indefinitely and I have decided to re-enable the submission box and start posting again with the following changes to site policy.
  • I will no longer guarantee that posts will go up within any specified time period. I will most likely update the site once a week or every other week, or pretty much whenever I feel like it.
  • I will be much more selective going forward about what posts will be published. I will reject entries for any reason I choose, including, but not limited to: 1) I can't think of a title, 2) I think the person posting posts too much, 3) I think the secrets are boring, juvenile, irrelevant, not secrets, or otherwise just don't want to.
I don't know if these changes will improve the site or destroy it or result in a flood of posts or none at all, but it will make it a lot more pleasant for me to run the site and right now, that's all that really matters to me. I'll get some new posts up as soon as I've received some that I feel like posting. The submission box is now accepting posts. Have at it.

Later,

K

  1. Welcome back K! I totally understand your frustration. Having this site should be fun for you. Of course, many people would be sad to see your site go away, but you have to do what makes you happy. And it sounds like it's becoming more work for you then you intended. Unfortunately, people sometimes can't follow directions or formats. I guess you can't always blame people for trying to push boundaries.

One idea with regards to creating titles. What about including a field for people to submit their own title. At least that would be a starting point, and you could always choose to edit. Look at confessionspost.com. That's how their site is set up. Just an idea.

Anyway, looking forward to reading more posts and you don't have to post this if you don't want. Good luck to you.
